How Pietra Dura is made
The step-by-step art you will try yourself.
-
Design
The pattern is drawn on paper, then traced onto the marble.
-
Cutting the marble
A slab of white Makrana marble is cut and shaped to form the base.
-
Cutting the stones
Semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, carnelian and malachite are cut into tiny pieces and shaped on a grinding wheel.
-
Carving the pattern
The outline is carved into the marble by hand, leaving a groove for every piece.
-
Fitting
Each stone is trimmed until it fits its groove exactly.
-
Setting
The stones are fixed in place with adhesive and the surface is levelled.
-
Polishing
The piece is polished by hand until stone and marble sit flush and shine.
What our guests say
“We wanted to learn more about the art that is behind the Taj Mahal after our visit that we did this morning. I think this is the perfect complementary experience… it really helps to value and to see the real effort behind this art… I will highly recommend coming here.”
