Marble Photo Frames with Hand-Set Stone Inlay

A photograph in a marble frame is treated differently than one in plastic. The frame signals that what it holds is worth keeping, and people arrange the room around it rather than tucking it behind something else.

The inlay

Floral borders are worked in Pietra Dura — malachite, abalone shell, lapis, and mother of pearl cut and set flush into the marble by hand. The pattern frames the image without competing with it, which is the difficult part of decorative frame design and the reason restrained borders outlast busy ones.

As a gift

These are among the most-given pieces we make: weddings, anniversaries, new babies, and memorials. A frame gifted empty carries an implicit invitation; gifted filled, it becomes the finished present.

Placement

Marble frames are heavy enough to stand securely on a mantel or console without a wall fixing. Keep photographs out of direct sunlight — the stone is unaffected, but prints fade.
