Marble Vases — Hand-Carved Stone with Inlay & Shell Overlay

A marble vase does something a glass one cannot: it holds its own when empty. Glass needs flowers to justify itself. Stone reads as sculpture on a bare console and simply becomes more when filled.

Inlay and overlay

Two techniques appear in this collection. Inlay sets cut stone flush into carved channels, so the surface is smooth to the touch. Overlay — used on the mother-of-pearl and abalone pieces — applies shell across the surface, catching light with an iridescence that shifts as you move past it.

Using them

The wide-mouthed cylindrical vases suit loose seasonal arrangements and branches. Narrower forms hold single stems well. Dried botanicals — pampas, bunny tails, eucalyptus — pair especially well with stone and require no water, which keeps the interior pristine indefinitely.

If using fresh flowers, a glass or plastic liner is worth adding: it makes water changes simple and keeps mineral residue off the polished interior.
