Handmade white marble vase with lapis lazuli floral inlay

How to Choose Marble Inlay Décor: 7 Things to Check Before You Buy

The short answer: when you buy marble inlay online, check seven things: what the stone is, how the inlay is made, how the edges and surface are finished, how heavy the piece is, whether it suits how you will use it, how it ships, and who made it. A trustworthy maker will answer all seven plainly.

What is marble inlay (Pietra Dura)?

Pietra Dura is the craft of cutting semi-precious stones into thin shapes and fitting them into carved channels in marble, then polishing the surface flush. It is closely linked with the Taj Mahal in Agra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (UNESCO World Heritage Centre), where inlay of this kind decorates the white marble. Craft families in Agra still work this way, by hand, and our workshop has made inlay pieces since 2007.

1. Ask which stone it is

Marble is a natural stone, so no two pieces are identical. White marble from the Makrana region of Rajasthan is the classic choice for this craft. Product pages should name the marble and the stones used in the inlay. Ours list them, for example carnelian, lapis lazuli, malachite, abalone shell, mother of pearl and turquoise. If a listing only says "stone" or "gemstone", ask.

2. Look closely at the inlay

  • The inlay should sit flush with the marble. Run a fingertip over it; you should feel no ridges.
  • The seams between stone and marble should be fine and even.
  • Each petal or leaf should have its own colour or shading. Flat, identical shapes can suggest printed or moulded imitations.

3. Check the finish and edges

Good pieces have a smooth, even polish and softened edges. Photos that show the underside, the lid fit on boxes and the base are a good sign. Our listings include several views of each piece for this reason.

4. Think about weight

Solid marble is heavy. A 4-inch coaster set, a tray or a chess board will feel much heavier than ceramic or resin versions of the same size. Check the listed size and weight, and make sure the shelf, table or display you have in mind can carry it.

5. Match the piece to how you will use it

Piece Best for Note
Coaster sets Daily use on tables Wipe clean; keep acids off the surface
Jewelry and decorative boxes Dressing tables, gifts Inlay on the lid; keep dry
Trays and platters Serving and display Check whether a piece is meant for food or for decoration
Vases Display Use a liner or glass insert for water
Chess sets Display and play The heaviest pieces we make

If a piece will hold food or drink, ask the seller whether it is suitable for that, and look at our marble care guide before you use it.

6. Understand shipping, timing and duties

Handmade pieces are made to order. At The Sangemarmar, orders are usually dispatched in 5 to 7 days, then take 7 to 21 days in transit, so allow up to four weeks in total. Shipping is free worldwide on orders over $75. Import duties and local taxes are not included in the price and may be payable on delivery in your country. A seller that states this up front is being honest with you.

7. Know who made it

Look for a real address, a way to contact the maker and a clear policy page. We are M/S S K Cottage Industries in Agra, India, and you can reach us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Is all marble inlay handmade?

No. Some inlay is machine-cut or moulded. Handmade pieces show small natural variations in the stone and inlay. Ask the seller how a piece was made.

Why is handmade inlay more expensive than a plain marble piece?

Each stone is cut, fitted and polished by hand, and a detailed pattern can contain dozens of small pieces. The labour is the main cost.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

Very close, but not identical. Marble veining and stone colour vary naturally, which is part of what makes each piece unique.

What size should I buy?

Check the dimensions in the listing against the space where it will sit. Marble looks best with some breathing room around it.
